This Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, John Hunter Nemechek will his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series start. Nemechek will do so driving the #42 Fire Alarm Services Chevy fielded by Chip Ganassi Racing. While just twenty years old, Nemechek is no newcomer to NASCAR. Since 2013, at the age of sixteen, Nemechek has been competing in NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series.

Since 2015, John Hunter Nemechek has run 64 of 69 Truck Series races in equipment that is anything but elite. Despite running a truck that is fielded by a team owned by his dad and run out of a two-car garage, he has won five races in that span. Also posting twenty-one top 5s and thirty-two top 10s. Nemechek has shown serious talent since he has come into NASCAR. While he often struggles to run up front at 1.5-mile track,s that isn’t the case at short tracks and road courses. You can always count on seeing him up front at those type of tracks, because it is where driver talent really shows. Nemechek placed 8th in Truck Series points the past two seasons.

However, while he has been racing in the Trucks since 2013, this is his first big break in NASCAR. Chip Ganassi Racing is one of NASCAR’s top teams and fields cars that can win any given weekend. While he will likely not perform as well as Kyle Larson has, it will be interesting to see what Nemechek can do in top-tier equipment. While not everyone may know who he is there is no questioning the fact that he has earned this opportunity. The question is if he will take advantage of this opportunity and earn a full-time ride with CGR in 2019.
