Six To Go: Playoff Season Window Closing For Big Name Drivers

Playoff Season Pit Stop Post via

With just 6 races to go until the 2017 playoff season begins, several drivers are dangerously close to being on the outside looking in.

The 2017 NASCAR playoff season is just a half dozen races away.

Among the winless drivers that have previous wins at the next few tracks on the schedule are:

Kyle Busch – Watkins Glen, Bristol, Darlington, Richmond, Michigan

Matt Kenseth – Pocono, Michigan, Bristol, Darlington, Richmond

A.J. Allmendinger – Watkins Glen

Clint Bowyer – Richmond

If the season was over today, these drivers would be out by points:

Clint Bowyer – 33 points below Kenseth on the cutoff line

Joey Logano – 51 points below the cutoff, has 1 playoff point but an encumbered win.

Erik Jones – 126 points below the line

Daniel Suarez – 132 points below the line

Trevor Bayne – 180 points below the cutoff

Those making the playoffs if the regular season ended today:

Driver                                       Wins                                    Playoff Points

Martin Truex Jr                            3                                                  29

Ryan Blaney                                 1                                                      8

Denny Hamlin                             1                                                      7

Kurt Busch                                   1                                                      5

Ryan Newman                             1                                                      5

Austin Dillon                               1                                                      5

Kasey Kahne                               1                                                       5

Those above the cut line and would be in on just points are Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray, Chase Elliott and Matt Kenseth

Remember, a win virtually guarantees a driver a spot in this year’s playoff season.

So let’s break down the next two tracks we’re headed to – Pocono, nicknamed the “Tricky Triangle”, and Watkins Glen, the next road course in the NASCAR circuit.

Matt Kenseth is the only winless driver on the list above that has a win at Pocono. It doesn’t mean that’s who you should put on your fantasy list at Draft Kings. But the last 2 winners at The Tricky Triangle were Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher. If they found the speed there before, they’re bound to do it again.

Blaney and Buscher got their first wins at Pocono in the last 2 races, so look for a rookie or non-winner

There are two winless drivers who have previously won at WGI, Kyle Busch and A.J. Allmendinger. Kyle has officially passed the 1 year mark since he has won a race, and the M&Ms Toyota driver needs a shot in the arm at this point. AJ was listed as a driver to consider in last year’s race preview with my boss Brent Jones, as well as Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher.
