Space Jam 2 could be coming soon, but who will take the lead role?

The Possibilities of Space Jam 2

21 years ago Space Jam was released and Michael Jordan defeated the Monstars 78-77 at the buzzer with one final stretch from half court.

Jordan led the Tune Squad to victory and freedom. With less than seven seconds in the game, Jordan reminded people why he’s the greatest. MJ would eventually return to earth after defeating the Monstars and retrieving his NBA friend’s talent.

Space Jam 2?

The 21-year-old film was directed by Joe Pytka, who did an amazing job of constructing one of the greatest films of all-time.

Leo Benvenuti, Steve Rudnick, Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod wrote the film 21 years ago. Warner Brothers recruited Michael Jordan, Wayne Knight, Theresa Randle and Bugs Bunny as the main cast.

Throughout the movie, there are special appearances from Bill Murray, Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, Patrick Ewing, Shawn Bradley and more.

If you haven’t seen the movie you should be ashamed of yourself. (Dead pool voice) The movie is centered on Danny DeVito’s character Swackhammer, who is an evil alien struggling to maintain his unsuccessful theme park.

Swackhammer struggles to attract guest and make a profit. After seeing one of his guests yell that he is never coming back, he converses with his Moron Mountain gang. While accidentally turning the channel he discovers the Looney Tunes.

Desperate to make ends meet he sends the Nerdlucks to capture Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes. The Nerdlucks attempt to capture the Looney Tunes, but gets tricked into playing a basketball game.

After being embarrassed by Bugs Bunny the aliens steal talent from NBA players, including Larry Bird and Charles Barkley and more, which led to Bugs recruiting the G.O.A.T.

Bugs and Daffy Duck would eventually take a trip to Jordan’s house after convincing him to come out of retirement and abandon his awful debut in baseball. (No shade)

MJ would lead the Looney Tunes to the promise land defeating the Monstars and getting his friends talent back. The Looney Tune legend would come out of retirement and return to the Bulls at the end of the movie.

In 2014, Warner Bros. announced the potential of a sequel which would star LeBron James, who is set on chasing Air Jordan’s legacy.

On May 2nd, 2016 director Justin Lin who is known for Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift and Star Trek, was reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to be the director for the potential sequel.  On November 15th, 2016, the film’s anniversary, Footlocker released a trailer which featured the Monstars, Jimmy Butler, Bugs Bunny and Blake Griffin.

Fans were ecstatic after the release of the commercial which led to the infamous question when will Space Jam 2 be released?

Throughout the years there have been rumors of Jordan making a guest appearance and possibly Tiger Woods which doesn’t make sense. (How SWAY)

If you were a director who would you cast to be the lead in the possible 2018-19 film?

LeBron James:

Now I am sure that everyone wants LBJ to take the role and star in the potential sequel. But you have to ask yourself why. Think about how the first film ended with a game-winning “dunk” from Jordan. Make no mistake James will be in the Hall of Fame and retire as an all-time great. Career-wise James is averaging 27.1 points, 7 assists and 7.3 rebounds.

King James has changed the league with his ability to dominate while putting his teammates first. Often times his style of play sparks criticism and people question his ability to close late in games.

The three-time NBA champion often shies away from taking the final shot, but he has that ability to make his teammates better.

I’m not sure how that would work against the Monstars considering the fact that the Looney Tunes didn’t have a great game one.

I love LeBron, but he shouldn’t be the lead. (I know he has acted, but TrainWreck wasn’t that funny)

Blake Griffin:

Wait a minute Mr. Post man. You may know Griffin from Lob City, random Kia commercials and his dry sense of humor. While at one of his basketball camps, Jordan was asked who would be a good fit for the Space Jam sequel.

A lot of people were surprised with his selection of Blake Griffin. But if you think about it, Jordan’s selection makes sense. The former Oklahoma Sooner has camera presence, a sense of humor and swag. Not to mention he would fare well with the Kids.

This would be a great fit for the film and he has already, made an appearance in the “Defy The Monstars” trailer that was released in 2016.

Steph Curry:

Adding Steph Curry to the potential Space Jam sequel would be amazing. Curry can virtually shoot from anywhere and he is probably the hardest player to guard. The two-time champion certainly has a case to be in the movie. (Steph Curry with the shot).

As much as I would love to see this it probably won’t happen because the Monstars would probably try to steal his talent.

Kobe Bryant:

The Black Mamba has to make an appearance in the film. I don’t think production would consider him as a lead in the movie because of his retirement at the end of the 2016 season. However, he should be considered for a smaller role. (Coach Bryant I’m just saying).

With all this talent in the league, the Nerdlucks would have a field day trying to figure out whose talent to steal. If I had to place my bet they would go for the starting five of the Golden State Warriors considering the fact they have won two championships in the last four years. Some other valuable options for talent are:

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • Jimmy Butler (Even though he hates Monstars)
  • James Harden
  • Russell Westbrook
  • Carmelo Anthony
  • Paul George
  • Marc Gasol
  • Kawhi Leonard

The original film was released November 15th, 1996 and grossed $230 million worldwide. If Warner Bros. and Lin get the ball rolling it probably won’t have as much steam as the original, but it will be great to see.

Lin stated that he doesn’t want to rush the project, but we could see possible production in 2018 or 2019.
