Derrick Rose Will Sign With Timberwolves

Former Chicago Bulls star and MVP Derrick Rose is headed to Minneapolis. The 29-year-old guard will sign a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the rest of the season, per Adrian Wojnarowski.

Summer Recap

Rose signed a 1-year, $2.1 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers over the summer. However, the honeymoon ended quickly after the guard only suited up for 16 games. Like last season the former Bull struggled to say healthy and missed a few months this season due to an ankle injury. Rose was traded to the Utah Jazz in a three-team trade that landed the Cavaliers George Hill and Rodney Hood. The Jazz and Rose agreed to a buyout on Feb. 10. Adding the former Memphis Tiger to the team could work out for both parties. However, this deal will only work out if the former 2011 MVP can stay healthy.

Reunited in Minnesota

Rose will be reunited with his former coach Tom Thibodeau, who he played for from 2010-2015.  Thibodeau may be able to spark some confidence in his former guard. If D-Rose can average around ten points a game it could help this young Wolves team out. At the age of 29, the 6-foot-3 guard has found himself often times contemplating retirement. Maybe coming off the bench could help take some of the pressure off of his body. Over the last two years when healthy the 9-year-veteran has played well. While playing with the Knicks he averaged 18 points and 4.4 assists per game. The 2008 first round pick only played 64 games with the Knicks after leaving the team due to personal reasons. Rose averaged 9.8 points 1.6 assists and 1.8 rebounds from the 16 games that he played in Cleveland, per stats.NBA.

This addition of the former MVP doesn’t put Minnesota over the hump or anything, but it may provide a boost for the team. Minnesota is currently sixth in the west at 38-28.
