Cousins Recruiting Players to New Orleans

Back in February, DeMarcus Cousins was traded from the Sacramento Kings to the New Orleans Pelicans. And after going through losing seasons for the first seven years of his career, Cousins seems as if he’s finally ready to win, and is willing to do whatever it takes to do so.

More Big Names to the Big Easy?

Earlier this week, Cousins spoke to writer Jim Eichenhofer about his efforts to recruit other players to New Orleans;

In order to win in today’s NBA, you have to be able to form a ‘Superteam’. And while the Pelicans have some nice pieces including superstar Anthony Davis, and guards Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo, the all-star center is fully aware that his team needs even more.

It seems like the former Kentucky big man is trying to pull off his best John Calipari impersonation as he’s trying to recruit players to New Orleans, just as Coach Cal recruited him to Kentucky.

Although Cousins didn’t dish out any names, he’s letting the Pelicans know that he is all in on trying to put the pieces together in order to better compete with the top dawgs in the Western Conference.

Boogie Slimming Down

Recruiting isn’t the only work that DeMarcus Cousins has put in this offseason. The 6-foot-11 big man reportedly lost 20 pounds since the end of the regular season. And after participating in the 2017 NBA Africa Game, Cousins had this to say regarding his new physical stature;

With Boogie entering his prime, this is a good sign that he’s in the best physical shape of his career. The lost weight should allow the 26-year-old to be quicker on his feet. And in today’s game, the quicker the big man, the better.

Final Thoughts

The Pelicans have the best big man duo in the league in Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins. If they play well with each other in 2017-2018, I think New Orleans will make the playoffs even in the stacked West. And even though Boogie couldn’t attract any free agents this offseason, a playoff berth can be an enticing plea to throw into the bargain for upcoming free agents in the future.

So if you’re a Pelicans fan, there’s plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Because who knows?! The next marquee free agent could be making his way to The Big Easy next year…
