Pacman Starts 2017 With Suspension

Adam “Pacman” Jones will start the 2017 season with a one-game suspension without pay. Jones is able to participate in all preseason activities. However, he will not be eligible to play in a regular season game until September 11th. As a result, Pacman will miss the Cincinnati Bengals‘ season opener against the Baltimore Ravens. He has three days to appeal the league’s decision should he choose to do so.

Violation of Personal Conduct Policy

Friday’s suspension is the result of an incident outside Cincinnati’s Millennium Hotel earlier this year. On January 3rd, Adam Jones was arrested on charges of assault, obstructing official business, and harassment with a bodily fluid after spitting on a nurse in the Justice Center. Joe Deters, the Hamilton County prosecutor, dropped the felony charges while leaving any further action to the city. In May, Jones pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge of obstructing police. The state court imposed a sentence of time served for his two days of confinement and court fees.

The NFL determined this incident to be a violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. In a letter to Jones, they explained their decision to impose a one-game unpaid, costing him $425K, suspension.

“Extensive video documentation of the tone, tenor and nature of your interactions with law enforcement at the site of your arrest, during transportation to the jail, and during the booking process. As you acknowledged, your post-arrest words and actions reflected poorly on you and your family, the Cincinnati Bengals football club, and the NFL. While it is our understanding that appropriate apologies have been publicly extended, they do not completely negate your behavior and admission of culpability for the underlying conduct.”

Cincinnati Bengals’ Statement

The Bengals organization quickly made a statement of their own regarding the situation.

“The Bengals anticipated this result and are glad to finally put the matter behind us. Our focus is on getting ready for the upcoming season. Adam will participate in training camp and we are counting on him to help our team when he returns from suspension.”
