Josh Dobbs Selected in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Steelers

Although he is coming back for at least one more season, it is clear that the Roethlisberger era in Pittsburgh is coming close to an end. With that in mind, the Steelers’ front office knew that they needed to look towards the future. In the 2017 NFL Draft, the Steelers selected quarterback Josh Dobbs from Tennessee with their fourth round selection (pick #135 overall).

Dobbs Had an Outstanding Career at Tennessee

With Dobbs, the Steelers are getting a quarterback that brings proven success. At Tennessee, he had experience as a starter in all four seasons. Josh burst into the national spotlight as a junior. In that season, he finished with 2,291 passing yards with 15 touchdowns. In addition, he had 671 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Dobbs continued putting up impressive numbers in his senior season. Bringing his time with the Vols to a close, Dobbs accumulated 2,946 passing yards with 27 touchdowns. On the ground, he finished with 831 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. His combination of abilities as a passer and mobility have made many experts compare him to the Cowboys’ rookie sensation, Dak Prescott.

Is Dobbs the Best Option for the Future?

The Steelers have made it clear that Josh Dobbs will compete for the backup quarterback role. In fact, the release of Zach Mettenberger just days after drafting Dobbs made this more evident. As a result, his only competition for the backup role currently on the roster will be Landry Jones.

Jones has been the Steelers’ backup for the past few seasons. He was recently signed to a two-year contract to stay in Pittsburgh. With injuries to Roethlisberger, the Steelers have had to rely on Jones to step in on multiple occasions. He is 2-2 as a starter when filling in for Big Ben. In 2016, he threw for 558 yards with 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

In a previous article, I stated that I believed the Steelers needed to look in the draft to find a better option than Jones for the quarterback of the future (see – ). As you will see, Dobbs wasn’t my choice for who I thought they would land. However, this is due to the fact that I thought Dobbs would be selected earlier in the draft. With him falling to the fourth round, this is a huge steal for the Steelers. They were able to draft their quarterback of the future after answering some bigger needs first. I strongly believe that Dobbs will eventually be viewed as one of the biggest steals in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Although drafting Dobbs is very exciting, Steelers fans need to enjoy the time they have left watching Roethlisberger try to lead Pittsburgh to their seventh Super Bowl title. It is just nice to know that after he has played his final game, the future looks to be in great hands in the Steel City!
