Le’Veon Bell Missing at Minicamp

As the Pittsburgh Steelers reported to their three-day minicamp session, there was a big name that was missing.  Running back Le’Veon Bell chose not to show up at minicamp. Bell’s absence comes in the middle of contract negotiations. Bell has yet to sign his franchise tender, so he is not officially under contract with the Steelers. Although Bell would have likely not been a huge participant in drills due to injury, this holdout is definitely being used to ramp up his contract negotiations. The Steelers and Bell have until July 15th to agree to a deal. If it doesn’t happen, Bell will play the 2017 season on his franchise tender. His tender is worth $12 million.

Bell Deserves to be Paid

From a production standpoint, Le’Veon Bell deserves some big money from the Steelers in his new deal. Bell is arguably the best running back in the league when healthy. In his career with the Steelers, Bell has accounted for 4,045 rushing yards with 26 touchdowns. He has also been a huge threat in the passing game, in which he has accumulated 227 receptions for 2,005 yards and five touchdowns. Le’Veon Bell played a huge role in the 2016 season. Bell finished with 1,268 yards rushing and seven touchdowns in 12 games. He also had two receiving touchdowns. Unfortunately, Bell went down with an injury in the AFC Championship. As a result, the Steelers fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Patriots 36-17. Had Bell not gone down, I fully believe that the outcome could’ve been a lot different.

The Money Will Come

With all of this being said, I believe that it is safe to say that Le’Veon Bell will have a brand new contract very soon. It has been proven with past experiences that Bell is a very crucial part of the Steelers offense and deserves to be paid big. With a healthy Bell playing on a new contract, it’s safe to say that the Steelers will be due for another long playoff run in 2017.
