James Conner Shines In Week Two Preseason Matchup

After two weeks of preseason football, things are looking good for the Steelers as they remain undefeated. In their week two preseason matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, the Steelers held on to win 17-13.

One big name that stood out in this victory was rookie running back, James Conner. After a rough start, Conner had an impressive game for the Steelers. Conner ran the ball 20 times for 98 yards. The only other running back to receive carries was Fitzgerald Toussaint, who had two carries for six yards. This performance should begin to solidify Conner as the backup running back behind Le’Veon Bell.

Staying on the offensive side of the ball, rookie quarterback Josh Dobbs completed his second start for the Steelers. This was due to both Ben Roethlisberger and Landry Jones remaining inactive for this week two preseason matchup. Dobbs struggled at times, finishing 10/19 passing with 70 yards, one interception, and no touchdowns. Bart Houston came in to relieve Dobbs and finished 5/9 passing with 24 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.

Martavis Bryant made his official return to action for the Steelers after reinstatement. He finished with two receptions for 20 yards. Sammie Coates also had 20 yards receiving on three receptions. Newly signed Justin Hunter had the lone receiving touchdown.

Chickillo And Dangerfield Lead Steelers Defense

In this week two preseason matchup, the Steelers were able to get by and produce without some of their star players. Players such as Bud Dupree, Ryan Shazier, Mike Mitchell, Cameron Heyward, and James Harrison were all inactive. This made room for young players such as linebacker Anthony Chickillo and safety Jordan Dangerfield to show that they can play.

Chickillo led the Steelers defense with five tackles. He also finished with two tackles for loss and two sacks. Performances like these will help Chickillo tremendously as he is battling with Arthur Moats for a backup linebacker spot behind Dupree.

Dangerfield finished the game with three tackles. However, his biggest contributions came in pass coverage. He finished the game with two interceptions. Dangerfield will most likely serve as a backup safety behind Sean Davis this season.

The Steelers also received some excitement on special teams in this week two preseason match up. Running back Trey Williams returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown. If Williams wants any shot of making the final roster, he will have to continue to impress on special teams, as the Steelers have a nice amount of depth at running back.

Next Up For The Steelers

The Steelers week three preseason matchup will be against the Indianapolis Colts. This game will take place on August 26th in Pittsburgh at 7:30 PM ET.
