Oakland Stars Sit In 20-10 Loss To Arizona In Preseason Opener

Football fans in the East Bay should not take this preseason opening loss too hard. Head coach Jack Del Rio made the decision to have his stars sit out the game in the desert.

Newly acquired running back Marshawn Lynch did not play. Also inactive were Derek Carr, Michael Crabtree, Amari Cooper, Khalil Mack and several other key players for Oakland. In fact, the only two players on the Raiders’ first team offense to play were tackles Marshall Newhouse and Vadal Alexander.

The biggest news to come from this game was the emergence of EJ Manuel. Manuel completed 10 of his 12 pass attempts for 107 yards while playing the entire first half. In addition, Connor Cook completed 10 of 21 passes for 82 yards. John Crockett scored the Raiders only touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

Oakland’s offense sputtered throughout the game as they only gained 252 yards. Clive Watford had a game high 3 receptions and 44 yards receiving for the Raiders. Regrettably, Oakland was also only able to muster 72 yards on the ground the entire game.

Oakland Raiders’ Defense

The Raiders’ defense looked like they were already in midseason form after the second half had begun. They were able to hold the Cardinals to three points and under 100 yards of offense after the break. The Raiders were also able to recover a fumble in the first quarter. Linebacker Cory James led the way with 7 tackles.

Veteran kicker Sebastian Janikowski had his 51-yard field goal attempt blocked in the first quarter. His heir apparent, Giorgio Tavecchio, made his one attempt from 43 yards out right before the first half ended.

The Raiders will have more players available for their next preseason game. Furthermore, Carr and Lynch are expected to make their highly anticipated preseason debuts. The Los Angeles Rams will be playing the Raiders in Oakland on Saturday. That game will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. PDT.
