Patrick Robinson’s Interception Ignites Eagles

January 21st, 2018 will go down in Philadelphia Sports History. The Philadelphia Eagles advanced to their third super bowl in franchise history defeating the Minnesota Vikings 38-7. As a result outdoor teams hosting a dome team in conference championship games improved to 13-0. In addition to that nine of the last 10, number one seeds have advanced to the Super Bowl. While the Eagles did dominate they surprisingly got off to a slow start. Falling behind by seven early on the Eagles were in need of a spark. Patrick Robinson’s Interception was the game-changing play that got the Eagles going.

Defense Rises To The Occasion

The Vikings received the opening kickoff and marched 76 yards on nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Vikings made all the right moves to begin the game. A blown coverage resulted in Kyle Rudolph running wide open for a 25-yard touchdown. Following an Eagles three and out the Vikings were on the move again.

Chris Long subbed in for his first snap of the night and his impact was felt immediately. On 3rd and 8 in need of a stop Long beat Rashod Hill off the edge and got a piece of Case Keenum’s arm as he released the ball. The underthrown ball fell into the waiting arms of cornerback Patrick Robinson. Picking up some key blocks including one from fellow Florida St Alum Ronald Darby, Robinson returned the interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Patrick Robinson’s interception began a 38-0 scoring run as the Eagles never looked back.

Wake up Call

With the score now tied at seven the Eagles defense locked in. The Eagles defense would force two more turnovers and kept the pressure on Keenum all night. Long would later recover a fumble ending another Vikings drive. The last gasp for the Vikings came on a 4th and goal from the eight-yard line. Vikings receiver Adam Thielen dropped a touchdown which would have cut the Eagles lead to 17.

On offense, Nick Foles shined throwing for 352 yards and three touchdowns. Foles was in 2013 form as he looked comfortable in the pocket and played with confidence. The underdog moto has fared well for the Eagles as they improved to 4-0 in postseason games in which they were underdogs. All three of the Eagles conference championship victories have come in Philadelphia.

Gang Green

Since allowing 29 points vs the Giants back in week 15, The Eagles defense has been simply dominant. Through two playoff games, the Eagles have allowed just 17 points. Over the last four games, the Eagles are allowing just 8.25 points per game. Fresh off the Miracle in Minnesota Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs was held to eight receptions for 70 yards and no Touchdowns while fellow wideout Adam Thielen was hampered by a back injury had just three for 28 yards.

Brady Awaits

The Eagles head to Minnesota where awaiting them will be Tom Brady. New England erased a 10 point fourth quarter deficit to top the Jaguars 24-20. This will be Brady and Belichick’s 8th Super Bowl appearance. These two teams will meet in a rematch of Super Bowl 39 where the Patriots won 24-21. On that night the Eagles fell just short but know this time around things can be different. It will be a matchup of great defense vs great offense. The Patriots come in with the Leagues top passing offense while the Eagles have the NFL’s 4th ranked defense. New England will be looking for an NFL record sixth super bowl while the Eagles are looking to end the dynasty and claim their first.
