Well Rounded Packers Top The Philadelphia Eagles In Opening Preseason Game

The Green Bay Packers welcomed the Philadelphia Eagles onto their home turf to begin the 2017 NFL preseason. Though just the first game of the preseason, the intensity was dense on the field. The Eagles came out firing on all cylinders but soon came to a halt as the Packers slowly took over the game. After the first few series, it looked like the Packers preseason had been in folly. Luckily, that was hardly the case. The Packers defense set a tone in the second quarter, forcing three turnovers. Big plays broke out in the same quarter, including Martellus Bennett‘s first catch in green and gold. With the defense rolling, it was smooth sailing for the Pack after establishing a 17-6 lead heading into halftime. The Packers would add a touchdown, while the Eagles would tack on a field goal as the final held a Packers victory 24-9.

Packers Preseason Week One Defensive Standouts

The Cheeseheads had quite a few players step up on defense during their first night out, and it did not go unnoticed. The safeties seemed to be all over the field, while the linebackers swarmed to the ball. Of course, the defensive line can not be left out, as the Packers defense gave up just 47 yards on 19 carries. The Packers preseason defense was in full effect.

Kentrell Brice was a name that was often in your mouth to begin the game. Brice had been all over the field prior to a finger injury in the second quarter that would hold him out. However, his most memorable play came early on a fourth and one on the Packers seven-yard line. Brice blew up the Eagles running play, disrupting the O-line and running back Corey Clement.

Linebacking Core

The next standout player cleaned up Corey Clement on fourth and one inside the ten-yard line. Linebacker Joe Thomas made that play, also showing up throughout the first half as a multi-dimensional force. Thomas also had a later stop on an Eagles third and two run which he stepped into the hole and stuffed. Lastly, Thomas intercepted a ball slightly overthrown in the middle of the field, returning it 30 yards. Turnovers have been hard to come by for Thomas, but improvement in this facet of the game could do wonders for the Packers defense going forward.

Packers Special Teams Standout

The Packers special teams unit was strong in their first showing. Punter Justin Vogel averaged 44 yards per punt while dropping five of six inside the 20. However, it was a second-year receiver that made the biggest splash on this side of the ball.

While the Packers defense may have shifted this game early, it was an early punt return from Trevor Davis that took all momentum from Philly. Early in the second quarter, Trevor Davis took a punt 68 yards on a house call. The play came at a perfect time, as the Packers were down 6-0, struggling to get anything going on offense.

Packers Offensive Standouts

Green Bay’s offense made some big plays through the air without the likes of Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers. The running game struggled but will look to get their feet under them after posting just 18 yards on 14 carried between FIVE running backs. Overall, the offense posted just 261 yards, but a few players still made big plays for the Pack at home.

That being said, DeAngelo Yancey was one of a few standouts. Yancey caught three of his four targets for a team-high 67 yards. His most impressive catch went for 46 yards and showcased his athleticism and hands.

Standout Quarterback

Backup quarterback Taysom Hill also made waves under center in the victory. Hill completed four of his five passes for 69 yards. He also placed a touchdown perfectly as time ran down in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Hill had two runs for a total of 14 yards to show off his legs. He delivered the 46-yard pass to Yancey that dropped in beautifully.

The Packers preseason is off to a good start, but fans and analysts alike should stay tuned with TSJ Sports as the roster solidifies in the coming weeks.
