Do The Falcons Have A Chance With Injured Secondary?

With An Injured Secondary, Can The Falcons Slow Down The Vikings?

The Falcons are heading into Week 13 a little hobbled. They get Devonta Freeman back, but the defense will be missing a key piece. Desmond Trufant went down early in the Buccaneers game with a concussion. He did not return to the game and will most likely miss this week. The Vikings come into this matchup with a top 5 offense and a dangerous passing attack. Adam Thielen has been a surprise for the Vikings this season and looks to be their top receiver. Stefon Diggs has added to that passing attack with his speed and quickness. With an injured secondary, what can they do to slow down the Vikings?

Move Brian Poole Outside

There was a chance we were not going to see Brian Poole this week. He left the Bucs game as well with the lower back injury. On Monday it was announced that his injury was day-to-day, which gives him a good chance on Sunday to play. Poole has done a great job as a nickel back, but he might have to move on the outside in this game. He is a physical corner, so he will give Thielen and Diggs problems. Poole is not a shutdown corner like Trufant, but we should expect him to get the job done against the Vikings.

Move Ricardo Allen Around

When all three corners went down last Sunday, Ricardo had to play in coverage. He did not disappoint, and he made a big play down the stretch. If Allen has to play every position, he will. That is just the type of person he is. If the Falcons can give the Vikings different looks, it may benefit them. It is also good to note that Ricardo was initially a cornerback when he first joined the Falcons. When Dan Quinn arrived, he shifted him to safety, and you can see that worked out well. Ricardo may have to go back to his old position a couple of plays in Week 13.

Depth Players Have To Step Up

We may get to see a lot of fifth-round draft pick, Damontae Kazee, this week. Where we will see him is a big question. If the Falcons decide to move Ricardo to corner, Kazee will be playing safety next to Keanu Neal. Like Ricardo, Kazee was drafted as a corner but transitioned to safety. That means those two guys are interchangeable in the secondary. The Falcons also have other depth players such as C.J. Goodwin and Blidi Wreh-Wilson. Since the team didn’t go out and sign a free agent, they must believe in their depth. It will not be an easy task with an injured secondary, but the Falcons will have a chance if everybody steps up.
