Devonta Freeman’s Deal A Positive For Falcons

The wait is finally over. On Wednesday the Falcons signed Devonta Freeman to a five-year deal worth $41.25 million. The extension will make him the highest paid running back in the league, something I’m sure Freeman wanted. Since days before the Super Bowl, we have heard rumblings of Freeman looking for a new contract from the Falcons. Many people thought that would be a distraction heading into the big game, but Freeman made sure to focus on the task at hand. At that point, we knew Freeman’s deal was coming, we just didn’t know when.

Before training camp, contract talks began to heat up again. The goal was to get Freeman’s deal done before the first week of camp ended, but that didn’t happen. From then it looked like Freeman wasn’t going to get his deal until later in camp or around the preseason games. Well, we’re a day away from the Falcons first preseason game and Freeman has been rewarded his well-deserved contract.

Freeman Earned His Deal

The year Freeman was drafted, he barely saw the field. He was the third running back behind Steven Jackson and Jacquizz Rodgers. His second year, however, he took many by surprise. He finished the season with 1,056 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Freeman made sure that his second season wasn’t labeled a fluke and produced more in his third season. He finished last season with 1,079 yards and 11 touchdowns. Freeman also added another element to his game last year, which was being a receiver. He thrived in that role as well with 462 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Being a versatile back is probably another reason Freeman’s deal is so rich.

Even with Freeman splitting the backfield with Tevin Coleman, he was still able to produce like a No.1 option. Now with Freeman’s deal, the Falcons have their running back of the future. They also have other players locked up for future, so this team is heading in the right direction. Freeman is just another piece added to the puzzle.
