Colorado Avalanche have slid into playoff contention

Throughout the years of the NHL being in existence, many stories emerge. From complete and utter letdown seasons, to unbelievable dominance; we, as fans, see it all. Every season is a different story throughout the league. This past year, fans across the world witnessed a back-to-back championship, the team to accomplish it–the Pittsburgh Penguins.  However, another underlying story throughout the league was the historically-horrendous play of the Colorado Avalanche. Due to this problematic 2016-2017 season where the Avalanche did not even break the 50-point mark as a team, the outlook was not good for this season. Opposite to this prediction, the Aves sit just one point out of a playoff spot. Especially relevant to their success this year is one player in particular.

Nathan MacKinnon

What a break-out year MacKinnon is having. Comparing his performance this year to that of last seasons is not a fair comparison. In the train wreck that was last season for the Avalanche, the 22-year old tallied 53 points and a dismal +/- of -14. He did not perform to expectations, nor did the team. However, this season has been a complete difference for Mackinnon. In 49 games he has put up 61 points (24G-37A).  MacKinnon is 3 points out of setting a new career high coming into Wednesday night. He has brought great leadership to a young Avalanche team and created a fire in the lineup.

The Avalanche are a playoff contender in a talent-packed Western Conference. Their Alternate captain is providing production this year which is creating a very interesting turn-around from last season. MacKinnon is improving himself and those around him. Colorado is competitive again and totally different from last year. Look for the Avalanche to bolster their lineup for a potential playoff run this year as the team is proving all the critics wrong.
