Veteran forward will look to regain prolific scoring touch in Vancouver

For the first 10 seasons of his career, Thomas Vanek was seen as one of the NHL’s most underrated goal-scoring threats. He scored at least 20 goals in each of those 10 seasons, topping 30 goals four times. His production has tailed off a bit the last two seasons. However, it hasn’t stopped him from getting another contract.

In a late off-season move, Thomas Vanek signs a one-year, $2 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.

The 33-year-old is coming off a rather respectable season in 2016-17. He tallied 17 goals and 48 points in 68 games with the Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers. In 885 games in the NHL, Vanek has tallied 333 goals and 697 points with six different teams.

While he did put up decent numbers last season, it was the second straight season that Vanek didn’t reach the 20-goal plateau. The Canucks brass and fan base will surely hope he can get there again with their team.

While discussion the signing, Vancouver general manager Jim Benning said, “Thomas has been a prolific scorer throughout his career and we’re excited to add his offense and experience to help with the continued growth of our forwards.”

Nothing has been mentioned about his role in the forward group, yet. However, it would not be surprising if Vanek plays on the same line as the Sedin twins at some point.
