Argentina unveiled Jorge Sampaoli as new manager and vows to build a team around Lionel Messi

Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentina unveils Jorge Sampaoli as new manager of the national team and vows to build a team around Lionel Messi.

Former Sevilla boss guided Sevilla to fourth place in La Liga and the Champions League round of 16 last season. However, the 57-year-old admits he is “fulfilling a dream” by sacrificing the Andalusians for the Albiceleste.

“This is a dream come true, one that I had desired for some time. I always admired this place,” Sampaoli said at his unveiling. “I thank the [AFA] president [Claudio Tapia] for his patience.

“The contract is through to the 2022 World Cup. I hope we can do something important for Argentine people.”

Argentina had been without a manager since they dismissed Edgardo Bauza on April 10 while holding the job for just eight months.

Prior to taking the reins at Sevilla, Sampaoli was a great success as the head coach of Chile’s national team, guiding the country to a Copa America title in 2015, beating Argentina in the final.

Speaking at his first press conference as manager, he was asked about the influence of Barcelona forward Messi in the team.

‘I had to face Messi [with both Chile and Sevilla],’ he said. ‘We want the world’s best player to feel happy being here.

‘The important thing is that Messi has compatible players. I spoke to him and he is very excited.’

Messi has scored 58 goals in 117 appearances for Argentina. However, the 1978 and 1986 world champions currently sit outside an automatic qualifying spot for next year’s World Cup in Russia after six wins in 14 qualifying games.

Additionally, their last four qualifiers are against Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador.
