Marco Asensio: The Future Of Football?

Marco Asensio’s two goals from 30 yards in two successive games have pushed him further into the spotlight.

It also helps that the goals came against none other than Barcelona.

Young Asensio

Born in Palma in 1996, Asensio’s first taste of top level football was when he joined hometown club RCD Mallorca in 2006. This was the beginning of his journey to becoming the player he is today

11 years on from joining Mallorca, Asensio is one of the most sought after players in the world. His combination of pace, power and skill, accompanied by his left foot, makes him one of the most dangerous players alive. All at only 21.

Asensio and Madrid

Real Madrid signed Asensio in 2014 for a fee of €3.4 million euros. After signing he was loaned back to Mallorca for the rest of the season. On his return to Madrid, he was again loaned out for another season. This time to Espanyol, where he further impressed. He returned to Madrid after that season having accumulated 12 assists.

Asensio’s first competitive game for Madrid came in a 3-2 win against Sevilla in the UEFASuper Cup. Asensio scored a 25 yard drive in this game, the beginning of his rise to stardom. The beginning of the hype that would surround his left foot.

Asensio played another 23 times last season for Madrid in the league, scoring three goals. He also scored in the Champions League final as Madrid beat Juventus 4-1.

His strengths.

Everything, being completely honest. He’s lighting quick, like Gareth Bale quick. He can turn defense into attack within seconds, which really suits Madrid’s direct style of play. Not since Lionel Messi’s debut in football have I seen a player with such a beautiful left foot. It’s like a wand, whatever he hits turns to gold. His hat-trick for Spain in the Under-21 world cup recently showcased just how good his left is. His two goals against Barcelona this week further hammered home how much of a talent Madrid have on their hands. Asensio’s buyout clause is believed to be €350m euros.

The world will be patiently watching Asensio’s rise. With everyone wondering who the next Messi and Ronaldo will be, and when they will come along. Could they already be playing right now? Neymar, Asensio. Messi, Ronaldo?
