Antoine Griezmann stays with Atletico Madrid

Madrid, Spain – “Now more than ever Atleti” said Antoine Griezmann as he confirms he is staying with Atletico Madrid.

In the midst of Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejecting Atletico’s transfer ban appeal, rumors surfaced that Griezmann would be staying with the club instead of joining Manchester United this summer. The rejection also meant that Atletico would not be able to replace the Frenchman until the winter transfer window in January. Something that would be not in their best interest.

Additionally, the BBC reported that United had cooled their interest in the Colchonero striker. United are now targeting a main striker rather than a number 10 to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The club believes they already have enough players to fill that role.

Meanwhile, Ibrahimovic begun his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery on a knee ligament injury last April. His contract expires at the end of June.  LA Galaxy and a possible return to AC Milan are on the table for the striker.

Atleti and Real Madrid were initially banned in January 2016 after both clubs were found guilty of breaching rules in signing foreign minors. However, Real Madrid was clear of any wrong-doing.

For Atletico, they must figure out whether they will reintegrate loanees Matias Kranevitter, Luciano Vietto and Diego Jota. In 2015, Barcelona went through the same punishment. While they did sign Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal that summer, neither player played any minutes until January of 2016.

This huge blow also puts on hold the signings of Diego Costa, Fabinho, Vitolo, Sandro Ramirez and Alexandre Lacazette. Unless, of course, they decide to take the route that Turan and Vidal did in 2015.
