David Beckham announces launch of his MLS Miami team

Miami, FL – In an emotional statement David Beckham announces the launch of his MLS Miami team. Beckham’s team would enter the US top flight as its 25th team in 2020.

The club has no name so far although the owner’s team has used Miami Vice and Miami Current. This is the first time since 2001 that a professional soccer team returns to the city of Miami. However, fans will be involved in selecting the team colors and name. It will also play in a temporary home until a new 25,000-seat stadium is built in Overtown.

Beckham, a former captain of England’s national team, who also played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and in M.L.S. with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Monday’s announcement, made four years to the week after the league held an event to herald his intention to field a team, had long been contingent on the ability of Beckham’s ownership group to finalize a stadium plan.

“The stars have aligned,” Carlos A. Gimenez, the Miami-Dade County mayor, said in a telephone interview on Monday morning. “There were a lot of false starts, a lot of obstacles to overcome. David persisted and persisted, and when a door closed, there was always another one.”

A recent Gallup poll stated that soccer ranks second in popularity as a spectator sport among people 18-34 (tied with basketball) in the US, behind only American Football.

The Los Angeles Football Club will debut as the 23rd franchise this season. Nashville will debut next season and will become the 24th club. However, Cincinnati, Sacramento and Detroit are all in the hunt to join Miami and become the 26th expansion team.
