Manchester City close in on world record deal for Ederson

Manchester, England- Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign Benfica’s number one Ederson Santana de Moraes. The deal is reported to be worth £34 million. The reported fee would break the world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper. The current record has stood since 2001 with Juventus paying £32.6 million to Parma for Gianlugi Buffon.

The move would also see Man city nearly double the British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper. City’s rivals Manchester United hold the current record having paid around £18.9 million for David De Gea in 2011. It would also see Pep Guardiola double the fee he paid Barcelona for Claudio Bravo last summer.

Who is Ederson?

The 23-year-old started his career with Sao Paulo at the age of 16.  After finding game time limited at Benfica he joined Portuguese second division side Ribeirao ahead of the 2011-2012 season making 29 appearances. Ederson then joined first division Rio Ave a year later after impressing at Ribeirao.

Following his performance at Rio Ave, Brazil under 23 squad called him up. He enjoyed two successful seasons at Rio Ave making 37 appearances. His form prompted his former employers Benfica to resign him for around half a million Euros in the summer of 2015. He was initially behind his fellow countryman Julio Cesar in the pecking order.

However, he impressed after replacing the injured Cesar in March 2016 in a game against rivals Sporting Lisbon. He kept a clean sheet as Benfica claimed a vital 1-0 win. He went on to become a regular in the starting line up as Benfica claimed the league title. This season has seen him establish himself as Benfica’s number one making 27 league appearances as well as staring in their run to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Would This Be A Good Signing For Manchester City?

Ederson’s arrival would probably signal the end for England number one Joe Hart. Hart has spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Torino in Italy. Fellow keeper Willy Caballero has already been released following the end of the season.

This would leave Man City with just Claudio Bravo as a recognized first team goalkeeper. The Chilean has struggled to adapt to the Premier League in his first season. He has made some high profile mistakes and received criticism from pundits and supporters. Bravo even lost his place in City’s starting line up to Caballero during the season after a string of errors.

If Guardiola is going to improve on this seasons third placed finish and challenge for the title next season it is vital that he secures a reliable goalkeeper. Ederson has proven himself to be a capable goalkeeper. Showing he is able to make world class saves at Benfica. He has also shown his ability to distribute the ball effectively which is something Guardiola demands from his goalkeepers. This singing therefore appears to be a good one but whether he is worth the world record fee remains to be seen.
