Manchester City Announce Signing of Ederson

Manchester City have announced the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson. The former Benfica man has signed for a fee of 34.7 Million.

The signing has been in the works for weeks, with Ederson saying his goodbyes to the Benfica faithful with a trophy win in their last outing.

Ederson (23) has appeared only 37 times for Benfica. Before that he had spells at Rio Ave and Ribeirão.

Manchester City will hope he can be the key to solving their goalkeeping problems. Claudio Bravo had a less then impressive season last year, with criticism coming frequently for the Chilean. But speaking ahead of Ederson’s move, Bravo vowed to keep fighting.

“My future is still linked to City for a long time,” he told AS ahead of Ederson’s move to the club.

Ederson’s Signing

The signing of Ederson is Manchester City’s second of the season. Their first being Bernardo Silva of Monaco. The signings are statements of intent for the season ahead. City want their crown back. And their determined to spend to get it.

The signing of Ederson could spell the end for Joe Hart at City. Speaking in a recent interview with Soccer Am, Hart himself said he “couldn’t see himself” back at the Manchester club. Guardiola froze him out at the beginning of last season, ahead of his shock loan move to Torino.

Ederson’s transfer fee of £34 million (€40 million) makes him the most expensive goal keeper of all time. Breaking the previous record of £33 million held by Gianluigi Buffon. Ederson can only hope to have as good a career as the great Italian. Not many will be able to though.

The stage is set for Ederson and with the fee paid the hype is huge. Can the Brazilian live up to expectations? Or will City have another Bravo situation? Only time will tell.
