Southampton Appoint Mauricio Pellegrino

Southhampton, United Kingdom – Southampton Football Club have today confirmed Mauricio Pellegrino as their new first team coach.

The ex Alaves boss has signed a three-year-deal at Saint Mary’s, just a week after Southampton parted company with manager Claude Puel following a disappointing season on the South Coast.

In many ways, Pellegrino had a similar season at Alaves to that of Puel’s at Southampton, reaching the final of the Copa Del Rey and coming ninth in La Liga.

He has some Premier League experience, being part of Rafael Benitez’s coaching team while at Liverpool.

As a player, he made 13 appearances for Liverpool in 2005. He also played for Benitez during six years at Valencia from 1999.

He had arrived at Valencia from Velez Sarsfield, following a loan spell at Barcelona the year before.

Pellegrino was also linked with a move to Crystal Palace, until they offered the job to Frank De Boer.
