Premier League

How things stand with two games to play

Only two matches remain in the 2016/17 Premier League season. Relegated duo Sunderland and Middlesbrough already know they will play in the Championship next season. However bottom side Sunderland may decide who joins them after winning 2-0 at Hull City last time out. They also face Swansea City on Saturday at home.

The defeat at home to Sunderland leaves Marco Silva’s Hull in 18th place going into the last two games of the season. Swansea’s 1-0 win at home to Everton last weekend lifted them out of the bottom three a point ahead of Hull.

Crystal Palace, Watford and Burnley could all still mathematically be relegated. Palace have 38 points and face Hull City at Selhurst Park in a crucial match on Sunday.

While Watford and Burnley both have 40 points leaving them six points clear with only six points to play for. Therefore they will only be relegated if there is an unlikely swing in both points and goal difference.

Will the relegation battle go down to the last day of the season?

There is only one scenario that would see the relegation battle decided this weekend. Crystal Palace would need to beat hull. This would secure Palace’s survival as well as Watford and Burnley’s. Hull would be left on 34 points. If Swansea then won at Sunderland, Hull would be relegated with one game left.

However if Hull match or better Swansea’s result then the final relegation place will be decided on the final day next weekend.

Also if Crystal Palace lose to Hull they will still have a chance of being relegated on the last day.

Who will go down?

Silva’s Hull look the most likely to go down ahead of this weekends fixtures. Although a win against Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace would give them a huge chance of survival.

The Tigers face second placed Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the season. Tottenham could have nothing to play for if Chelsea clinch the title before the last day. This could be an advantage for Hull but they must at least draw with Palace to have any chance of survival.

Swansea City’s game against already relegated Sunderland is a huge chance to secure their survial. They know a win would put enormous pressure on Hull. However if they slip up they could end the weekend in the relegation zone once again. They may still need to win against Sunderland and then West Brom on the final day to be sure of survival.

For Crystal Palace to go down they will need to lose to hull on Sunday. They would then need to get a result at Manchester United on the last day. If they lose both games they will be vulnerable to relegation. If Hull then win both of their games and Swansea collect four or six points then Crystal Palace will be relegated.
