Former Barcelona President Sandro Rosell arrested in money laundering case

Barcelona, Spain – Former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell arrested as part of money-laundering investigation. In addition, authorities also detained Rosell’s wife Marta Pineda in connection with his businesses in Brazil.

Per El Mundo (h/t Marca), Spain’s National Court ordered the probe, and a joint task force, comprised of the civil guard and police, arrested him after the investigation indicated he “collected irregular commissions, obtained through the sale of the image rights of the Brazilian football team.”

Authorities also detained three other people. Additionally, Police raided offices, homes, and businesses in Barcelona and other locations in Spain as part of “Operation Rimet,” in reference to former FIFA president Jules Rimet.

Reports indicate that the amount laundered through tax havens amount to nearly €15m.

Rosell acted as Barcelona president between 2010 to 2014. His eventual resignation followed a Spanish court’s decision to investigate Neymar’s 2013 transfer from Santos. In that case, €57 million signing of Neymar from Santos were alleged misappropriated funds. Club member Jordi Cases claimed that the amount paid was more than the fee reported at the time.

Rosell had close connections to the former president of the Brazilian football confederation Ricardo Teixeira. Furthermore, Spanish authorities also investigated Teixeira. Teixeira resigned from the Brazilian confederation in 2012 citing medical reasons amid widespread allegations of corruption and irregularities in his administration.

More arrests and indictments on corruption charges will follow in the subsequent days. In March, FIFA passed on evidence from its internal inquiry to Swiss and US authorities.
