Roma Appoint Eusebio Di Francesco As New Head Coach

Rome, Italy – Roma have officially confirmed that Eusebio Di Francesco as their new head coach. The former Sassuolo coach left the club to join Roma on a two-year deal. Sassuolo confirmed their manager’s departure by mutual consent in a statement released on Tuesday.

Furthermore, Di Francesco replaces Luciano Spalletti, who departed the club for Inter after a second-placed Serie A finish in 2016-17. Up and downs were part of Di Francesco’s time at Sassuolo. Di Francesco navigated the club to promotion from Serie B in the 2012-13 season. However, in January 2014 he was fired and later re-appointed in March. As a former Roma player, Di Francesco immediately emerged as the favorite to replace Spalletti. A compensation package for Sassuolo was keeping the move from happening despite the writing on the wall.

“When we sat down to discuss the ideal candidate for the role of Roma coach, we wanted someone who could come in and get the very best out of our first team players and also help bring through some of the great young talent coming out of our academy,” said AS Roma president Jim Pallotta.

Di Francesco returns to Roma having previously been part of the club during his playing days. During In total he made 129 appearances – scoring 16 goals – and helped the club win the Serie A title in 2000-01.

During his professional career he also earned international recognition, winning 12 caps for Italy. After retiring as a player in 2005, he subsequently returned to Roma as team operations manager for the 2005-06 campaign.

He has previously also coached Virtus Lanciano, Pescara and Lecce.
