Kris Bryant and Mike Trout win MVP honors

Perhaps the biggest and most well-known award in baseball is the MVP Award. Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) vote for players who they believe demonstrated the best skills during the regular season. There is an MVP Award handed out to a player in both the American and National League. This years finalists for the award were:

National League:

Kris Bryant, Daniel Murphy, and Corey Seager

American League:

Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, and Jose Altuve

How they were chosen:

These finalists were chosen because they are the best of the best. They represent the best talent in major league baseball, and they prove that on the field.

National League:

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant has been voted as the 2016 NL MVP. Bryant had a wonderful sophomore season in the big leagues. He hit .292 with 39 home runs and 102 RBI’s. His .939 OPS was good enough for 4th best in the NL, while his 7.7 WAR led the National League. Kris’ MVP season goes deeper than just numbers. The 24-year old played multiple positions for the Cubs in 2016. While he spent most of the season at third base, he also played left field, right field, and even first base. To many, a player that can play all over the field and hit 39 home runs in a season is the true definition of an MVP.

American League:

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout has been voted as the 2016 AL MVP. Trout put up yet another great season in 2016. The 25-year old hit .315 with 29 home runs and 100 RBI’s. He led the majors in WAR with a 10.6 mark, and was the only player with a 10.0+ WAR this season. His .991 OPS was good enough for second in the American League, while his .550 slugging percentage ranked 4th in the AL. This is Trout’s second MVP Award in three years, and makes him just the 5th position player to win two MVP Awards by age 25. With many years left in the career of Mike Trout, he could very well win this award many more times.

What this means:

The MVP Award is the most coveted award in the game of baseball. Most baseball players dream of winning this award at some point in their career. These two players are great examples of the talent that is in the game of baseball these days. Both of these guys are 25-years old or younger, which means we could see them win this award again at some point in the future.
