The San Francisco 49ers and All Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman have agreed to a 4 year, $44 million deal according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter.

Bowman still had three years remaining on his current contract, so this deal will put him under team control for the next seven years.  There is $20 million in guaranteed money on the deal.

Since entering the league in 2010, the former Penn State Nittany Lion standout has been one of the best linebackers in the NFL, earning four First Team All Pro awards and appearing in three Pro Bowls.  In 2015, Bowman led the NFL in tackles with 154.

Entering his sixth season, this deal makes sense for both Bowman and the 49ers Bowman gets $20 million in guaranteed money and a deal that he could potentially complete if he is able to stay healthy.

He will provide stability to Chip Kelly‘s defense as he begins his second stint as a NFL head coach.  Kelly never had a player of Bowman‘s caliber during his time in Philadelphia, so the 49ers may be able to improve on last years performance, where they finished 29th in total yards allowed, ahead of only Philadelphia, New Orleans, and the New York Giants.

Following his dismissal from Philadelphia, numerous players spoke out about the negative impact Kelly had on their performance, mentioning the additional days of practice following games and unwillingness to adapt his system to maintain possession and close out games.
