Adam Wainwright’s Impressive Season… At The Plate

We have all heard about Madison Bumgarner’s hitting and the numbers he produces at the plate, but St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright has hit the ball a lot better than Bumgarner this season. Wainwright has 13 hits this season with 10 of those being extra-base hits. Along with those numbers Wainwright has 18 RBIs and 2 of his hits have left the ballpark.

Wainwright’s 18 RBIs is the most of any pitcher since 1973. This season Adam Wainwright is one of two pitchers who drove in 4 runs in a single game. Wainwright did it on Tuesday night’s 10-5 win over the Colorado Rockies. He hit a two run double in the 2nd inning and a two run bloop single in the 5th inning.

Ahead of Wainwright on the list of Cardinals pitchers with RBIs in a season are Bob Gibson with 19 RBIs and the Cardinals record holder Dizzy Dean with 21 RBIs back in 1935.

The only other pitcher to have 4 RBIs in a game this season is Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

Wainwright has commented on his approach to hitting:

“My whole career, I’ve fought trying to pull the ball and tried to stay up the middle and hit the ball to right field. It just doesn’t work for me very well,” Wainwright said. “If it’s a pitch in the strike zone, I’m going to swing at it.”

Wainwright has clearly had a monster season (for a pitcher) at the plate, but his pitching numbers are not much to be excited about. Adam Wainwright started the season as the Cardinals ace, but the 35-year-old right hander has definitely struggled this season. Although he does have a winning record of 12-9, his ERA is a career worst 4.57 and he has allowed 204 hits which is 4th worst in major league baseball.

The St. Louis Cardinals are definitely looking to get more out of him on the mound next season, only time will tell if Wainwright is able to produce those kind of numbers at the plate next season.
