Alex Bowman Out, Regan Smith In At Tommy Baldwin Racing

Just hours after it was revealed that Alex Bowman would not be returning to drive for them in 2016, Tommy Baldwin Racing announced early Thursday evening that it has signed Regan Smith to drive its Sprint Cup car this season.

Bowman’s contract option for this season was originally picked up In June, but plans changed in the past forty-eight hours as Bowman and TBR mutually parted ways. In fact, that was how long Regan Smith was aware of his secured future, ironically at Tommy Baldwin Racing.

“It happened quick. I’ve never had anything happen like this. Three weeks before (Daytona), I didn’t think that was possible. I’m still kind of in awe right now.” Regan Smith said in a interview shortly after the announcement on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “I’m excited to get to work for Tommy Baldwin Racing, I can’t tell you how blessed I am. Man, I’m just ready to get to work.”

This will be the first full Sprint Cup season for Smith since 2012, where he split time between Furniture Row Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, and Phoenix Racing. He has since spent most of his time at JR Motorsports in coincidentally in the 7 car (Same number he will run at TBR), but has subbed in for drivers at the Sprint Cup level like Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson.
