Astros Call Up Top Prospect Alex Bregman

Following their blowout of the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, the Houston Astros have called up 22 year-old Alex Bregman from Triple-A Affiliate Fresno.  The Astros sit ten games over .500 and just 2.5 games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.

Bregman was the second overall selection in the 2015 MLB Draft.  The former LSU standout has put together a tremendous season thus far through 80 games between Double-A and Triple-A.  This call up was only a matter of time for Bregman who is batting over .300 with 20 home runs and a robust .986 OPS in the minors in 2016.  Baseball America ranked him as the eighth best prospect in the game in their Midseason Top 100 Prospect rankings.

Bregman received a ton of national attention following his outstanding performance in the Futures’ Game during All-Star Weekend.  Despite the U.S. Team losing to the World squad, Bregman went 3-5, falling a home run short of the cycle.  Bregman likely would have been the MVP of the game if not for an incredible showing from Boston Red Sox Cuban prospect Yoan Moncada.

Bregman will likely play games at third base and in the outfield with the Astros in 2016.  Bregman has played a majority of his professional career at shortstop, but Carlos Correa will remain the shortstop in Houston.  The Astros recently signed Cuban sensation Yulieski Gurriel to a five-year deal worth over $47 million.

The 32 year-old Gurriel has been said to be major-league ready, so it should be interesting to see if Bregman or Gurriel receive more playing time down the stretch.  After having a very slow start, the Astros have made up a ton of ground on the Texas Rangers, and Bregman could be the impact player that puts the Houston Astros over the top of the reigning division champs.
