Former Barcelona director Andoni Zubizarreta appointed as new Olympique Marseille sports director

Marseilles, France – Former Spain goalkeeper and Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has joined Marseille to take up the same role at the Ligue 1 side, the club announced.

Zubizarreta previously did the same job at Barcelona between 2010 and 2015, when he was responsible for the arrivals of Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Ivan Rakitic. In addition, he was subject of a young Barcelona fan when Douglas was signed and no one in Europe (or even in Brazil) knew who he was and why he was signed by Barcelona.

“Zubi! Who is Douglas? What position does he play? Forward or goalie?”

The French Ligue 1 club, under new ownership, sacked Belgian sporting director Gunter Jacob on Wednesday after just three months in the job.

The Spaniard will work alongside new coach Rudi Garcia after the former Lille and Roma boss signed a three-year contract to take over at the Stade Velodrome last week.

Now 55, “Zubi” won 126 caps for Spain during a distinguished playing career in which he represented Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia.
