Atletico Madrid Signs Nicolas Gaitan

Madrid, Spain – Atletico Madrid has made official the signing and transfer of midfielder Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica, according to the Colchoneros website.

Gaitan is playing the Copa America Centenario with Argentina’s national team. He is expected to travel to the Spanish capital to finish all the necessary formalities to join the club.

The operation totals to 25 million euros.

The 28-year-old leaves the Portuguese club where he has played since 2010. He earned 10 titles while with the Lisbon club. The midfielder has capped 15 international games with Argentina while scoring twice.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone had said after the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last month that he was considering his future at the Vicente Calderon. However, he announced on his Instagram account this week that he had returned to work.

Atletico is said to tie up a deal for Croatia right-back Sime Vrsaljko from Sassuolo. He’s quoted in the Italian media on Thursday as saying: “From the first moment this possibility became real, I have told the Sassuolo leadership that it was my wish to go to Atletico Madrid.”

Vrsaljko is reportedly set to cost an initial 16 million euros.
