Bad Boys: Struggling to make the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference!

Detroit Basketball

Detroit Basketball is the chant that every opponent hears when they step into the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Detroit Pistons have been known for their tough defense, physical play, and bold character.

When you think about the Pistons you remember legends like Bill Laimbeer, Joe Dumars, Dennis, Rodman, and Isiah Thomas. Another legendary line-up is Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace.

The Motor City franchise has won three championships in 1989, 1990, and 2004. The organization has had great coaches from the likes of the late Chuck Daly, Flip Saunders, and Larry Brown. Since winning the championship in 2004, the Pistons made the playoffs every year until the 2009-2010 season.

Stan Van Gundy Era!

Since 2004 the franchise has been through seven head coaches. As of now it seems that current Head Coach Stan Van Gundy has the team going in a positive direction. In addition to being the head coach Van Gundy also is the teams President of Basketball Operations.

Van Gundy was hired in 2014 and instantly made an impact. After missing the playoffs in 2015, the Pistons would make the playoffs in 2016, despite being swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s obvious that Van Gundy is trying to create a roster around his star center Andre Drummond, just like he did for Dwight Howard in Orlando.

However, there is a huge problem; the Orlando Magic had better shooters, scorers, and defenders. The 2008-2009 Magic had an even roster. Every player knew their role and stuck to it, and o yeah they listened to their coach.

Potential Issues & Solutions!

The Pistons roster has great talent, but some acquisitions are questionable. At this moment the rotation consist of Drummond, Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Stanley Johnson, Tobias Harris, Marcus Morris, Jon Leuer, Ish Smith, and Aron Baynes.  Will this line-up bring back Detroit Basketball?

From a future prospective the franchise should be elated because they have a nucleus in Harris, Drummond and Caldwell-Pope. Now ask yourself what if. What if management decided to trade any of the three pieces?

I would trade Drummond instantly. Drummond is a dominant center, but teams naturalize his presence by relying on the hack a shaq, which ruins the team’s offensive rhythm.

More Money More Problems?

The beginning of the season started off rocky for the Pistons.  After a promising start Jackson was out the first twenty-one games due to knee tendinitis.

Later on in the season, forward Morris called a players only meeting where he called out Jackson. The team went 11-10 without their starting guard in the line-up. Upon Jacksons return the team went 3-6.

The former Oklahoma City Thunder guard can play, however he tends to hold onto the too long.  All season Jackson has been fighting to re-gain his teammates trust, but it may be too late.

End of the Road Reggie?

Before the 2017 trade deadline it was clear that Van Gundy was trying to move Jackson. Due to Jackson’s high contract and attitude teams were scared away. With eleven games left will the Pistons make the playoffs?

If the franchise does not make the playoffs what will happen? I don’t think Van Gundy should be fired because he is building a young talented roster. However, Jackson should be on his way out. If the starting guard gets waived the team has a valuable replacement in Smith.

Currently, the Pistons are still in the hunt for the final playoff spot at 34-37, which is one game behind the Miami Heat.
