Ravens 2017 NFL Mock Draft

Baltimore has missed the playoffs in three out of the past four seasons. With a top tier defense, a deep and talented draft is all Baltimore needs to be back on top of the AFC. GM Ozzie Newsome has a history of deep, talent filled drafts, Ozzie also caters to the tendency of best player available over team need, and these themes carry to this mock.

Round 1, Pick 16: Derek Barnett, Edge, Tennessee

Derek totaled 13 sacks in his final season at Tennessee and is a premier edge rusher in this year’s draft. Barnett isn’t a workout warrior, but he puts it all together on the field, which is what the front office in Baltimore looks at. Barnett would provide an immediate boost to an aging and lackluster pass rush, and is Baltimore’s top defensive prospect sitting at 16 on the board. Some scouts have said that Barnett has a higher ceiling than consensus number 1 Myles Garrett, and is the type of guy Baltimore is known for jumping on in the middle of round (see Ray Lewis).

Round 2, Pick 15: Adoree’ Jackson, Corner, USC

Jackson is an incredibly athletic corner who can also make plays on special teams. Jackson can make plays in a multitude of schemes and has great ball skills. The only knock on him is his size for an outside corner, which works with Baltimore since they have a need for guys that can work the slot. Adoree’ would be a great grab at this pick and would provide amazing talent and depth at the corner spot and would be an instant upgrade in the kick return role.

Round 3, Pick 10: Pat Elflein, Center, Ohio State

Elflein would be an instant starter after Jeremy Zuttah was shipped away for picks in the draft. Pat’s work ethic and knowledge are raved about by scouts, and lined up next to Marshal Yanda, would provide a terrifying interior for years to come. Elflein is a can’t miss prospect that just needs to work on his footwork to be a top tier center in the league. Elflein and Yanda are both guys who have a mean streak and mentally and physically finish plays with authority, this match would be made in heaven.

Round 3, Pick 14: Cooper Kupp, Receiver, Eastern Washington

Kupp is a prolific pass catcher who holds the all time FCS record for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. Kupp’s pass catching ability has been compared to his idol’s, Larry Fitzgerald. Cooper burnt both Marcus Peters and Sidney Jones when facing Washington. His ability is first round, but school size will probably drop him into the 2nd-3rd round. Kupp would provide depth and talent at receiver, something Baltimore desperately needs.

Round 4, Pick 15: Justin Evans, Safety, Texas A&M

Evans is a hard hitting safety with the ball skills of a slot receiver. He is an amazing playmaker who is dynamic in skillset. His knocks are on his instinct as he gets further from the ball. Also he tends to get stuck on blocking tight ends in the slot. Some scouts fear that his tackling is more focused on big hits instead of sure tackling. Evans would be a solid 4th round pick up who would be a great developmental guy to possibly replace Eric Weddle in the coming years.

Round 5, Pick 15: Jarron Jones, DL, Notre Dame

Jones is an interesting prospect. He is incredibly talented but has some character concerns. Jones is an athletic freak with incredibly long arms that generates rare push. His flags are related to his injury riddled career at Notre Dame and his motivation. Scouts question his love for the game and if he is truly motivated. Jones is a boom or bust prospect that could be worth the gamble for a DL needy team.

Round 6, Pick 2: Joshua Dobbs, QB, Tennessee

Joe Flacco is 32 years old and the Ravens don’t have a solid backup plan other than Ryan Mallett. While Mallett has proven decent in short term stints, a long term answer is needed. Dobbs is a solid, big armed QB who could be a dependable option in the future. Dobbs has a high football IQ and in the classroom. If he is coachable and receives well to staff, Dobbs could be a go to guy in future years.
