Bank of America 500 At CMS Preview

This weekend, NASCAR’s finest head to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America 500. This is the 30th race of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup season and the 4th race in the Chase For The Sprint Cup. In last years running, Joey Logano beat out Kevin Harvick in a race delayed a day by rain.

New Round, New Start: This weekend marks the start of the second round of The Chase For The Sprint Cup, also known as the Round Of 12. All advancing drivers have had their points reset to 3,000 regardless of a win in the prior round, but their seeding is based on wins and then other rules. Any Chase-eligible driver who wins one of the three Round of 12 races (Charlotte, Kansas or Talladega) automatically advances to the Round of 8.

Matthew The Pest: Hurricane Matthew is expected, to an extent to interfere with some track activities this weekend. Although, most of it’s effects will remain around the coast of North Carolina, expect outer rain bands to damper most activities (including XFINITY Series race) Friday and the day of the Cup race Saturday.

Jimmie Johnson – Queen City King: Jimmie Johnson will try to add to his Charlotte Motor Speedway record of seven wins in Saturday’s Bank of America 500. The No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports driver also boasts 14 top fives and 18 top 10s in 30 career starts there. Among active drivers at Charlotte, Johnson ranks first in average running position (8.3), driver rating (109.6) and laps led (1,740). Additionally, Jimmie has also won the fall race all 3 times since the introduction of the Chase in 2004.

Kahne The Spoiler?: Look out for Kasey Kahne this weekend. A one-time Charlotte fall winner, he leads all active drivers with 581 laps led in the track’s Chase races. Kahne has run strong lately with four top 10s in his last five starts and no finish lower than 14th in his last seven starts. All this, and a “nothing left to lose” resume makes him the ultimate sleeper come Saturday.

Kyle Busch Searching For 1st CMS Win: The No. 18 Toyota driver has visited Victory Lane 38 times in his Sprint Cup career, and has at least one win at every active track except for Pocono and Charlotte. One of those is the site of this weekend’s race, and Kyle is always a top contender. Keep an eye out on Busch this weekend.
