Barcelona Legend Johan Cruyff Passes Away At 68

Barcelona, Spain – Johan Cruyff has passed away at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer, his official website announced.

“On March 24 2016, Johan Cruyff (68) died peacefully in Barcelona, surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with cancer,” reads the statement from his official website.

“It’s with great sadness that we ask you to respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

The reinventor of modern soccer, had been battleting cancer since last October, where he announced he had lung cancer.

Cruyff helped his country reach the World Cup final in 1974, winning three Ballon d’Or titles. He was also a key part of the Ajax side that won three straight European Cups between 1971-73 and went on to play and manage at Barcelona.

While in charge at the Spanish club, he led them to their first European Cup win in 1992 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1989. During his time with the Catalan club, he underwent heart surgery in 1991 as he was a smoker during his playing days.

Many have said that it was he who brought the glory that Catalonia experiences today by laying the foundations for the club’s heavy focus on youth development and defining a style of play that ran through all levels at the club.

His last managerial appointment came at the Catalonia national team, where he was in charge from 2009 to 2013.

He forever will be rememebered as one of the greatest soccer players that ever lived, a genius for some, and for others, the player they most likely did not want to match up against.

Many thanks are given to this soccer giant as the evolution of soccer can be granted to him.

Rest in Peace Johan Cryuff.
