Bartolo Colon inks one year deal with Braves

It has been about a week since there was a Major League Baseball game played, but that hasn’t stopped the Atlanta Braves from moving forward and beginning the process of putting their team in place to win next season. Their number one goal going into the offseason was to acquire pitching. They have done just that with their recent signing of R.A. Dickey and just today, Bartolo Colon.

After spending the last three seasons in New York with the Mets, Bartolo Colon will join the Atlanta Brave next season. MLB Reporter Jesse Sanchez confirmed it will be a 1 year/$12.5 million contract.

This season, Colon was arguably the most consistent and reliable pitcher for the Mets. He pitched 192.2 innings over a span of thirty-four games while striking out one hundred and twenty-eight opposing batters. He even had a team leading fifteen wins. Going into the season with guys like Jacob DeGromMatt Harvey, Steven Matz, and Noah Syndergaard, no one quite saw Colon being a reliable arm in the rotation. Colon led the Mets last season in games started, wins, and innings pitched.

Fun Fact:

Bartolo Colon will also be the last Montreal Expos player to play in the MLB.

“All the records that I can reach are important.” – Colon

“I’m always chasing after myself and pushing myself.” – Colon

After being a fan favorite, people grew to like Big Sexy, A LOT. Not only will the fans be sad, but his old teammates will be also. Noah Syndergaard as well as a few others took to Twitter to share their feelings.

Final Thoughts:

The Braves went 68-93 last season which put them in dead last in the National League East. Now they plan on using Bartolo to come in and make them a contender. A month into the season he will be 44 years old. That is quite a lot to ask of a middle age man. Despite recent success, I do not see Colon making much of a difference to this Atlanta team, even if he is his 2016 self or better. At the end of the day, Colon will give it his all and be a leader for this inexperienced Braves team and pitching staff.

Hope you bring the fans joy in Atlanta like you did for those in New York and across the country.
