Billy Butler Injured After Dispute With Teammate Danny Valencia

Billy Butler missed games on Saturday and Sunday against the White Sox. This is unusual because the Oakland Athletics use Butler as a platoon DH against lefties and the two games were against left handers Jose Quintana and Chris Sale. A’s manager Bob Melvin stated that Butler was not in the lineup due to nausea and vomiting, however, the flu was ruled out.

However a new report claims that there is more to Butler’s absence over the weekend than just an illness. According to San Francisco Chronicle writer, Susan Slusser, Billy Butler was injured in a clubhouse incident with teammate Danny Valencia.

The altercation occurred on Friday night and so far nobody with the Oakland A’s has commented on the incident. Danny Valencia was asked about the altercation after the team’s 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox:

“No comment.”  “What happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse.”

Valencia does have a bad reputation in the clubhouse and has changed teams often. The Athletics are the sixth team Valencia has played for in the last 4 years. That is probably why very few teams had interest in Valencia at the trade deadline despite his impressive batting line (.302 AVG /.351 OBP /.478 SLG).

Butler and Valencia have had reduced playing time as of late with Valencia losing time to Ryon Healy.  Full details of the altercation are still unknown, so it’s uncertain whether further action will need to be taken. The report of nausea and vomiting are red flags for a concussion and if the incident was big enough to give Butler a concussion, the Athletics have a serious problem.
