Blues’ Backes, Allen to miss rest of Regular Season

Captain, Goalie Dealing with Lower-body Injuries

ST. LOUIS-Yesterday marked the beginning of the last week of the NHL regular season. For teams fighting to get in the playoffs, this is the last chance to make their move. For the teams already in, it’s time to straighten out a few details in their game and/or fight to get the highest possible seeding. One of the those teams is the St. Louis Blues. Having already clinched a playoff spot, the Blues are trying to catch the Dallas Stars for the top spot in the Central Division and Western Conference. They will have to do it, though, without their captain and one of their goaltenders.

Center David Backes and goalie Jake Allen will miss the rest of the regular season with lower-body injuries, the team announced on Monday.

It is not sure when Backes got hurt as he played in St. Louis’ last game, a 5-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night. He played the entire game, tallying a goal and an assist in the win. The Blues’ captain did suffer an upper-body injury earlier this year, but still played in every game prior to today’s announcement.

Allen, on the other hand, was hurt in the win versus Colorado, a game in which he started. He sustained an undisclosed injury in the first period. The 25-year-old netminder appeared to get hurt after making a save late in the period. When trying to get off the ice for the intermission, Allen seemed to not put much weight on his left leg.

St. Louis general manager Doug Armstrong said both players would be re-evaluated at the end of the season to see their availability for the playoffs next week. The Blues have three games left in their season.

Backes is second on the Blues with 21 goals and has 45 points in 79 games and Allen is who is 26-15-3 with a 2.35 goals-against average, .930 save percentage, and six shutouts in 47 games.
