Two points tonight gets St. Louis, Calgary into postseason

NHL

Wednesday night, the St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames had a chance to clinch a spot in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They weren’t able to do so then, but they get another chance tonight.

A win guarantees both the Blues and Flames a spot in the postseason. There are scenarios, though, where they can still get in  without a win. Here’s what each team needs to do to join the playoff party:

ST. LOUIS BLUES

Of the two teams, St. Louis has the simplest scenario to make the playoffs. The Blues just need to get one point against the Colorado Avalanche to make the postseason for the sixth straight year. However, they can still get in even if they don’t get the point.

Should St. Louis fail to get a point against the Avalanche, they will still get clinch their playoff berth tonight if the Los Angeles Kings lose to the Vancouver Canucks in any fashion.

CALGARY FLAMES

The red-hot Flames have a simple scenario, as well. The only difference is that they need to beat the defending Western Conference champions. A win in any fashion over the San Jose Sharks puts Calgary in the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Like the Blues, the Flames could also get in with help from the Canucks. If Calgary is only able to get one point against San Jose, they will also need Vancouver defeat Los Angeles to secure their playoff berth. Now, should the Flames lose in regulation, then a Canucks win in regulation will also get Calgary to the postseason.

While the Flames will surely not mind the help, there is incentive for them to go and get the win. Not only is their playoff spot up for grabs, but a regulation win gets them to one point behind the Sharks for third in the Pacific Division. They would also be three points behind the Edmonton Oilers for second in the division, and home-ice in the first round.

The Blues will visit the Avalanche at 9:00 PM ET, while the Flames will be hosting the Sharks at the same time.
