Young Defenseman becomes 21st Captain in team history

ST. LOUIS-Earlier today, Team Canada announced their captain for the upcoming World Cup. The St. Louis Blues seem to have caught the captain-naming fever and followed suit as they, too, named a new leader for the upcoming season.

The Blues named defenseman Alex Pietrangelo as their 21st captain on Thursday.

The 26-year-old replaces forward David Backes as team captain. Backes had worn the “C” for five seasons in St. Louis before signing with the Boston Bruins as a free agent on July 1.

Pietrangelo served as an alternate captain last season as he helped the Blues reach the Conference Final for the first time in 15 years.

The Ontario native, who will be representing Canada at the World Cup next month, had seven goals and 37 points in 73 games last season. He added two goals and 10 points during St. Louis’ playoff run. In 459 regular season games, Pietrangelo has tallied 51 goals and 255 points.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 is the latest defenseman to be selected to serve as St. Louis captain. He joins an impressive list that includes Hall of Fame inductees Al Arbour, Scott Stevens, Al MacInnis, and Chris Pronger.

The Blues also announced that Kevin Shattenkirk, Paul Stastny, Alexander Steen, and Vladimir Tarasenko would serve as alternate captains during the 2016-17 season.
