Brewers get younger, Rangers get better with deadline deal

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy has been dealt to the Texas Rangers. Lucroy vetoed a trade earlier this week that would have sent him to Cleveland. This deal also includes Brewers closer Jeremy Jeffress who has been pitching well this season.

Lucroy is batting .299 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI’s this season. He will provide the Rangers with a veteran catcher who can also display good offensive numbers.

Jeffress with bring stability to the Rangers bullpen. He is 27 for 28 in save chances this season with a 2.22 ERA. The Rangers also have closer Sam Dyson who will hang on to the closers role for now. With two shutdown closers in their pen, the Rangers can shorten games and give them a better chance to win after 6 innings.

In exchange for Lucroy and Jeffress, the Rangers will send Lewis Brinson and Luis Ortiz to the Brewers. Brinson is the Rangers top center fielder and he has been playing good baseball of late. He is hitting .237 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs, and 11 steals in 77 for Double-A Frisco this season.

Ortiz is a minor league pitcher that is currently in Double-A. He is pitching to a 3.48 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 67.1 innings.

This trade benefits both teams in a positive way. The Brewers got younger with Brinson and Ortiz and the Rangers beefed up both their lineup and bullpen.
