Browns Release LB Paul Kruger & Other Roster Moves

Veteran LB Paul Kruger latest casualty of Browns “Moneyball” approach.

Veterans like Paul Kruger aren’t used to being on the bad end of an NFL cut day.  Yet, in one of the more surprising moves today was the release of veteran linebacker, Paul Kruger.

Kruger came to Cleveland in 2013 in what was, at the time, a fairly big free agency move.  Kruger signed a 4-year, $40 million deal, leaving the division rival Baltimore Ravens to join the Browns.

The move stunned many fans, and the handling of it seemed to upset Kruger, as he tweeted out his reaction to the news:

Another big name waived by the Browns today was DB K’Waun Williams.

Williams was serving a two-week suspension for having not played in the Browns preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.  A game Williams claimed to have missed because of an injury to his ankle, but the Browns say they were never informed.

Williams may opt to retire but, will have to clear waivers before doing so.

Also, departing Cleveland today was punter Andy Lee.  While Lee wasn’t waived, he was traded, along with a 2017 7th round pick, to Carolina for punter Kasey Redfern and a 4th round pick in 2018.

Lee’s departure became hastened when head coach Hue Jackson derided Lee on the sideline following a complete and total lack of effort on a tackle opportunity Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On the topic of kickers, Travis Coons is another familiar face that will not be returning to Cleveland, as he was waived by the team today.

Others cut by the Browns today include:  QB Austin Davis; DL Nick Hayden; DB Sean Baker; TE E.J. Bibbs; WR Josh Boyce; WR Ed Eagen; FB Robert Hughes; OL Cory Tucker; TE David Reeves.

Placed on injured reserve were DL Nile Lawrence-Stample and RB Glenn Winston.
