Barcelona, Spain – Catalan midfielder Sergio Busquets has agreed to a new five-year deal to stay at Barcelona

The new contract for the Spain international includes a buyout clause of 200 million euros.

Busquets, 27, has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe over recent years and will now be with the club through to 2021.

“Busi”, as he is known among his peers, has made 384 appearances for the La Liga champions, scoring 12 goals. He has won 23 major honors with Barcelona, including six top-flight titles and the Champions League in 2009, 2011 and 2015.

As part of the new deal Busquets will also see a notable increase in his salary and will become one of the best paid players in the squad, behind only Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

The 27-year-old will sign his new contract days prior to him joining the Spanish squad ahead of this summer’s European Championships.

Busquets has been a key player in the middle of the field for all the trainers Barcelona has had since making the jump from the youth squads in 2008.

But not only for Barcelona, the Catalan has been a centerpiece in the success that La Roja has had in winning the 2010 World Cup in Africa and two Euro Cups in 2008 and 2012.
