Defenseman won Cup with Chicago in 2010

CHICAGO-As many people had been speculating, it looks like free agent defenseman Brian Campbell is going to return to the team he won a Stanley Cup with.

Campbell has reportedly announced that he will be rejoining the Chicago Blackhawks for the 2016-17 season.

ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun posted on Twitter that the 37-year-old has decided to go back with Chicago on what is likely to be a one-year deal.

Campbell played three seasons with the Blackhawks from 2008-2011 and was part of the Chicago team that won the Stanley Cup in 2010.

The Ontario native has spent the last five season with the Florida Panthers. In 1,002 NHL games, he has scored 82 goals and 487 points.

Nothing has been made official yet, but LeBrun believes the deal will be worth about $2 million.

If and when Campbell returns to the Blackhawks, it will be a benefit to the Chicago back end.

The Blackhawks have struggled with depth on the blue line the last two seasons. In the 2015 playoffs, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson, and Johnny Oduya played a ridiculous amount of minutes when Chicago won the Cup.

Last summer, they lost Oduya as he signed with the Dallas Stars and could not really find a consistent No. 4 defenseman all season. Campbell should help with that when he rejoins them.
