Chargers Rely On Defense; Romp Uninspired Jaguars In Week 2 Matchup

The San Diego Chargers had another tough loss Sunday when Danny Woodhead went down with a torn ACL.

The defense showed more signs of life than Chargers fans have seen in a long time. Yes, the defense; it almost doesn’t even sound right to say.

After the devastating Keenan Allen injury in week 1, disaster struck again when Danny Woodhead went down and didn’t get up. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

Defense was actually the key to the game. This is surprising for San Diego, as they’ve been carried by the offense over the years, led by Phillip Rivers and Antonio Gates.

The Chargers defense actually came to play Sunday. The Jaguars offense was said to be one of the up and coming units in the league. In week 2, they looked like they couldn’t move the ball to save their lives. Blake Bortles threw for over 300 yards and 2 touchdowns, with most of those numbers in garbage time.

Bortles was also picked off twice, both coming from Casey Hayward . This is an awesome sign, considering Jason Verrett is on the other side at corner. If Hayward can become a corner who makes plays like this, this secondary for the Chargers could be extremely capable.

The Jaguars didn’t even put a point on the Chargers‘ defense until the fourth quarter, when the game was already over. By the looks of the first three quarters, the Chargers defense looked great enough to shut the Jaguars out if it was a close game.

Joey Bosa still didn’t play, and it didn’t really matter. In fact, Blake Bortles led the Jaguars in rushing. The run defense of San Diego was thought to be one of the worst in the NFL, but that didn’t show on Sunday.

Whether this was a fluke or not, it’s always great to see a young and improving defense actually live up to what they could potentially become. For Chargers fans, this has to be a great sign.

What San Diego must do now is continue this play while waiting for Joey Bosa to return to the field. The Chargers will travel to Indianapolis to test their defense out against Andrew Luck and company.
