Recent changes for the Charlotte Motor Speedway 2018 Roval include elimination of 2 turns based on driver feedback.

CMS announced during the first day of the NASCAR Media Tour that the original 2.42 mile course was modified to 2.28 miles.

The biggest change is the elimination of the final two turns before cars carry back up to the regular track in Turn 1. 2 chicanes have also been added on both straightaways to allow for more passing opportunities.

This change reduces lap times on the course upwards of 10-15 seconds, depending on tire fall-off.

“The Roval is sure to provide the best show for the fans and the most challenging road course race for drivers”, said Marcus Smith, president and CEO of Speedway Motorsports.

The Roval obtained feedback over the past year from drivers such as Mario Andretti and Jeff Gordon.

“When September rolls around, fans will see a thrill show unlike any other”, Smith commented.

The Roval will be part of the playoffs of both the Xfinity and Cup series races.

Steve O’Donnell, EVP and Chief Racing Dev. Officer, says “One of the things our fans have always asked for was a road course in the playoffs”.

“I applaud Marcus for listening to that and coming up with something that is unique in that you can see the entire course.”

Cup Series champion Martin Truex said he believed drivers were “a bit nervous” about the event.

Truex got a chance to participate in the Goodyear tire test last October.

He said “it was completely different from any track I have ever been on.”

130 laps around the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval will make up the race distance on September 30. At 500 kilometers, or 312 miles, the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval will be the longest road course in NASCAR.
