General Manager Ryan Pace’s Free Agency Philosophy

Ryan Pace believes in filling needs in free agency therefore creating flexibility going into the draft. His philosophy is to add young ascending players in free agency which is quite evident with their signings thus far. Out of the ten new additions acquired from other teams, nine are 26 or 27-years-old. The lone exception is 31-year-old safety Quintin Demps.

The Bears are determined to upgrade their roster following a 3-13 season in 2016. They have been the NFL’s most active team through the first two-weeks of free agency. Chicago has signed 14 unrestricted free agents, a league high, which includes four of their own and ten from other teams. The San Francisco 49ers are the only team to have signed more players from other teams, three of which were Bears.

Meet the Newest Members of the Chicago Bears

Chicago added three defense backs during free agency; Prince Amukamara from the Carolina Panthers, Quintin Demps from the Houston Texans, and Marcus Cooper from the Arizona Cardinals; and defensive lineman John Jenkins from the Seattle Seahawks.

The Bears offense also acquired several new additions from other teams; offensive lineman Tom Compton from the Atlanta Falcons, running back Benny Cunningham from the Los Angeles Rams, quarterbacks Mike Glennon from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Mark Sanchez from the Dallas Cowboys, tight end Dion Sims from the Miami Dolphins, and wide receivers Markus Wheaton from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kendall Wright from the Tennessee Titans.

Returning Bears

Although they have added a variety of players from other teams, the Bears kept several of their own. Returning for the 2017 season are defensive backs Johnthan Banks and Bryce Callahan, safety and special-teams contributor Chris Prosinski, kicker Connor Barth, wide receivers Josh Bellamy and Deonte Thompson, tight end Daniel Brown, long snapper Patrick Scales, linebacker Christian Jones, center Eric Kush, quarterback Connor Shaw, and defensive lineman C.J. Wilson.

Remaining Bears Unrestricted Free Agents

Three offensive linemen; Mike Adams, Nick Becton, and Matt McCants; linebacker Sam Acho, wide receiver Marquess Wilson, and cornerback Brandon Boykin remain on the Bears unrestricted free agent list.

Remaining Bears Restricted Free Agent

Demontre Hurst, cornerback, is the only remaining player on the Bears restricted free agent list.

Goodbye Chicago

The Bears are saying goodbye to six of their free agents who are moving on to other homes in the NFL. Quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Brian Hoyer as well as tight end Logan Paulsen are headed to San Francisco after signing contracts with the 49ers. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles while center Ted Larsen heads down to Miami to join the Dolphins. Defensive lineman Cornelius Washington is on his way to Detroit after inking a deal with the Lions.

The Winds of Change

The Chicago Bears organization is determined to have their 2017 season obliterate the memory of the disappointing 2016 season. With the free agency moves they have made and the upcoming NFL Draft in April, they certainly have every chance to make that happen.

Time to Bear Down, Chicago Bears!
