Slumping Cubs Lose Again

On June 19th, the Chicago Cubs were an MLB best 27 games over .500. They held a 12.5 lead over the Cardinals in the NL Central. Since then, the Cubs are 5-15 and have seen their lead shrink to 6.5 games.

Many Cubs fans point to the loss of Dexter Fowler as the reason for the slump. He went on the DL around the time that the Cubs began this skid. Fowler is close to returning and should be able to return after the All-star game.

Injuries have certainly been a problem for the Cubs this season especially in the outfield. Along with Fowler, Kyle Schwarber, Jorge Soler and Chris Coghlan have all went down with injuries. Schwarber will be out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL and LCL in his knee but Soler and Coghlan should be healthy soon after the All-star break.

Even with injuries, the Cubs were still the best team in baseball until a couple of days ago. They have filled holes by playing Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist in the outfield. The Cubs also called up prospects Willson ContrerasAlbert Almora Jr., and Jeimer Canderlario. Mixing and matching players has worked for the Cubs but recently it just is not getting the job done.

During the slump, the starting pitching has not been good. Even the Cubs ace Jake Arrieta is struggling with his command. Up until this point, the Cubs have rode strong starting pitching and stellar offense. Since June 20th, it seems like the Cubs find ways to lose games. With everything from starting pitching giving up 10 runs, the bullpen blowing a save or the offense only scoring 2 or 3 runs.

With one game left before the All-star break, the Cubs will look to end the first half strong with a win over the Pirates. Maybe a couple days off will be what the Cubs need to return to greatness. Maybe a bullpen arm like Andrew Miller is what the Cubs need.

Whatever the need is the Cubs need to find it soon. Every time the Cubs go on an extended losing streak, the fan base has flashbacks to Cubs teams from the past. With all the talent that the 2016 Chicago Cubs have, it is impossible for them to continue to lose like this. Look for the Cubs to have a strong second half once they get everyone healthy.
